When applying for a trade mark, you must select one or more classes from the international Nice classification system.
Classes 1–34: goods
Classes 35–45: services
Choosing the correct classes ensures your trade mark protects the relevant areas of your business. You cannot add classes after you submit your application, but applicants may later restrict their list of goods or services.
Example:
A brand called ‘GreenLeaves’ sells eco-friendly products and services. It could be registered in:
Class 3: for natural cleaning products
Class 35: for retail and online store services selling eco-friendly goods
Class 44: for wellness and spa services using organic products
This trade mark can cover different classes when a business operates across various sectors. Choosing the right classes ensures full protection for all parts of the brand.
How to list classes
Classes must be listed in numerical order from lowest to highest and goods/services must be grouped correctly under each class. Goods and services must be described clearly and accurately to allow the Registrar to classify them correctly.
Classes define the scope of your trade mark’s protection, so you can protect the parts of your business that matter the most.
The cost of filing a trade mark application is £205, which covers one class. Each additional class costs £60.
For example, if your trade mark application covers five classes, the total fee will be £445.
The fee is based on the number of classes included in your application, not the number of terms you choose within each class.
Choosing the right classes
It is important to select the correct classes and terms, as your trade mark protection will only apply to the goods and/or services listed in your application.
Once your application has been submitted, you cannot add further goods or services
